Creamy Cauliflower Hummus | Practical Paleo, 2nd Edition Review | Real Food with Dana

I luuuurve hummus. Problem is, it definitely does not love me back if I eat it more than once in a while. The struggle is so real, you guys! Solution: this Creamy Cauliflower Hummus from Diane Sanfilippo’s NEW edition of Practical Paleo. #swoon.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I already wrote a review of the first edition of Practical Paleo. I didn’t think it was possible for this book to get ANY better, but somehow, Diane has done it again with this upgraded and updated version!

For years, Practical Paleo has been my #1 recommendation to readers, friends and family who are looking for easy, healthy recipes, whether they eat paleo, gluten-free or not. It’s been called the Paleo “bible” by myself and probably hundreds of thousands of other people. It’s a NY Times bestseller, and the #1 best-selling Paleo cookbook since it came out. I’ve also been using it in my health coaching practice with clients, and plan to use it in my future Nutrition practice as well! I’m even working in getting it into my Masters curriculum as one of the recommended reading for Clinical Nutrition. How cool is that?!

Anyway. So, aside from the kicka** recipes, pictures, and a gold mine of nutrition information for anything and everything you would ever want to know about the paleo lifestyle, from sugar and carbs, to cholesterol, stress, and even…your poop! Diane has also included new sections and information to the meal plans, including Adrenal Health/Stress Management (oh heeey, right up my alley!), Healthy Hormones, and Liver Detox Support, plus some new chapters covering the biggest questions in the real food/nutrition world since the last edition of the book, like adrenal fatigue, MyPlate, oodles of questions on digestion, and the like! Oh, and did I mention the gorgeous, epically delicious NEW recipes?! Seriously, this is eye candy enough to be a coffee table book…that you actually use every day for the recipes and info.

Some of my favorite recipes from the updated edition:

Breakfast Fried Cauliflower Rice
Souvlaki Kebabs
Honey Garlic Teriyaki Wings
Coffee BBQ Rubbed Pork with Seared Pineapple
Creamy Cauliflower Hummus {recipe below!}

6-Minute Salmon Bowls
Smashed Potatoes with Garlic & Onions

And my all-time favorites for the first edition? Don’t worry, they’re still in the updated version!

Spaghetti Squash Bolognese
Pesto Shrimp & Squash Fettuccine
Pumpkin Pancakes
Zucchini Pancakes
Jalapeno Buffalo Burgers with Sweet Potato Pancakes
Thanksgiving Stuffed Meatballs
Greek Salad with Avo-Ziki Dressing
Bacon-Wrapped Pecan Dates
Flourless Mocha Bacon Brownies

So whether you’re looking to make a healthy change for yourself, looking for some delicious recipes, are a practitioner looking for some practical information on the paleo/real food lifestyle for your clients, or are looking for an amazing holiday gift for a friend – Practical Paleo, 2nd Edition is exactly what you need, friend!

And now, on to that deeelicious and super easy Creamy Cauliflower Hummus recipe! Because that’s what we’re really here for, right? The food. ooooobviously.

This twist on the traditional Mediterranean favorite tastes almost exactly the same as the chickpea variety!
Dana:
Serves: 2 cups
Ingredients
  • 4 cups cauliflower florets, steamed
  • ¼ cup + 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 Tbsp tahini (sesame paste), raw or roasted
  • grated zest and juice of 1 lemon (reserve zest for garnish)
  • pinch of ground cumin
  • sea salt + black pepper, to taste (I used ½ tsp each)
  • pinch of paprika, for garnish (optional)
  • sliced vegetables, for serving
  • olives, for serving
Directions
  1. In a food processor, combine the cauliflower, ¼ cup of the olive oil, tahini, lemon juice, and cumin and process until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste, along with more tahini or olive oil if you like.
  2. Scoop the hummus into a serving dish and garnish with the reserved lemon zest, remaining tablespoon of olive oil, and paprika, if using.
  3. Serve with sliced vegetables and olives.
Notes
Author's note: I used an orange cauliflower for this recipe. If you spot one in your store or market, use it instead of the white variety for a deeper-colored dip.
**I love serving this with the Souvlaki Kebabs from the book!

  1. oh, no, I think I’ll need to get this book! I love hummus too but all of the “recipe” options out there call for legumes, which since my Whole 30 I’ve been trying to stay away from (extra carbs!). This looks relatively painless! Also: honey garlic teriyaki wings!
