Oh heeey, I’m Dana. A fun-sized entrepreneur, podcaster, and food lover who loves to make people laugh (mostly at me). I’m a Board-Certified Nutritionist, Licensed Dietitian-Nutritionist, and Body Image Coach teaching women how to fix their sh*tty relationship with food and their bodies, ditch the diet cycle for good, and heal and thrive with real food, one delicious meal at a time.
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by Real Food with Dana. Here you’ll find finger-licking delicious (if I do say so myself), real food recipes I’m sharing on my journey from what felt like rock-bottom illness to radiant health. Plus some nutrition & health tips, sarcasm, horrible puns, and multiple Mean Girls + Harry Potter quotes.
So here’s my food philosophy: Life’s too short to eat boring, tasteless food.
I started Real Food with Dana to inspire you to to try something new that just might blow your taste buds. To show you that cooking healthy food can be simple, fun, delicious, and healing, all at the same time! That’s why I really got into cooking in the first place. In the midst of dealing with a ton of health conditions, I realized I could help heal myself by eating REAL food, instead of the processed junk that makes people sick. But ain’t nobody got time to eat plain chicken breast and spinach day after day. I wanted to prove to myself that eating “real food” doesn’t have to be tasteless, difficult or complicated, and that I didn’t have to feel deprived despite the long lists of foods I was avoiding for my health.
Bust most importantly, I want to show you that your life’s purpose is NOT to lose weight and take up less space. And that you don’t have to diet your way into a smaller body your whole life in order to feel more valuable. That your yes/no foods list is not the answer to all your problems.
When I’m not cooking or thinking about what I want to cook next, I’m usually being active in some way. I love olympic weightlifting, yoga, hiking, skiing, I was a competitive swimmer for 16 years (that makes me feel super old), ran a half marathon in 2013 (stupid. stupid. stupid idea.)…you get the point. Oh, also I like to sing…in my car. And sometimes I like to dance, mostly in socially inappropriate settings (not just in my room) but that usually ends in me making a fool of myself. And if you haven’t figured it out already, I can quote Mean Girls like it’s my job.
Thanks for hanging out – Now let’s go eat some tasty food! Want to know more about my health journey? Check out My Story, My struggle with adrenal fatigue, or Recovery: my adrenal fatigue story, part II.
I received my Masters of Science in Clinical Nutrition from Maryland University of Integrative Health in Columbia, Maryland and my degree in Integrative Health Coaching online from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.
In 2013, I was fed up with my desk job that was sucking my soul, and I decided I wanted to pursue my passion for nutrition and health further. So I enrolled at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. But even after I had that Health Coaching degree, I was hungry for more – so I decided to get my Master’s in Clinical Nutrition from Maryland University of Integrative Health. Now, I work with athletes, people with chronic health conditions, and a history of eating disorders to help them heal and thrive with real food, and sustainable lifestyle changes. It’s my mission to make sure the same series of unfortunate events that I experienced does not happen to others by helping them realize how food is a powerful key to prevent illness or achieve great health.
