I’m really excited this week to bring back my great friend Cristina Hoyt Alvarez. Cristina was on episode three where we talked all about diet culture, and this episode, we’re talking about the Truth about Metabolic Damage, which is also known as Metabolic adaptation, Survival or Starvation Mode, or Adaptive thermogenesis. And honestly, we thought about titling this podcast – the truth about metabolic damage: check yourself before you wreck yourself. We’re talking about how metabolic damage happens, the signs you may be seeing if you’re going through metabolic damage or if your body is currently living in starvation mode, both the short term and longer, downstream signs that it’s been going on for a long time. We also explain how your metabolism and hormones are so interconnected, and how metabolic damage is closely tied in with adrenal, thyroid, and other hormonal problems.

Here’s what we’re talking about this week!

  • What is metabolic damage?
  • Spoiler alert” Your metabolism isn’t broken. How metabolic damage, adaptation, survival / starvation mode, and adaptive thermogenesis are the same thing. What do they mean?
  • How does it happen? this may be you if…
  • What are the signs and symptoms that you may be experiencing metabolic damage? (Including both short and long-term effects)
  • How this goes so far beyond the inability to lose weight; and how metabolism and your hormones are so interconnected. We discuss how metabolic adaptation is related to adrenal, thyroid, and other hormonal problems as well.

  1. It’s so hard to determine whether you’re TRULY undereating or just in a caloric deficit for fat loss. What would you suggest?

    1. If you’ve been in a caloric deficit for a while (for fat loss or for whatever reason!) and those results aren’t happening, it means your metabolism has most likely adapted to that level of deficit. Meaning that deficit isn’t working for your body right now. Undulating your energy intake, doing something like carb cycling, would be extremely beneficial to re-sensitize your metabolism and get you burning more again!
