This week’s episode is a Part 2 of last week’s “Are you ready for an elimination diet” with Cristina Hoyt Alvarez. Cristina and I are talking about both of our experiences with using elimination diets for therapeutic use vs. abusing them in a way *just to lose weight*, how these types of protocols can cause anxiety, depression, and social isolation, and exacerbate the all-or-nothing mentality that we are trying to free ourselves of in diet culture.

PS – make sure you check out last week’s episode before you listen to this one!

We’re chatting about the dangers and negative side effects of elimination diets & therapeutic protocols – falling into the all-or-nothing mentality, yes and no foods lists, abusing the protocols over and over again while just trying to lose weight.

How do we stop being so obsessed with food? Listen in for Cristina’s “No Rules, Rules” approach – so you can finally listen and hear what your body is asking for by learning the language of your body.

Reminders about elimination diets and therapeutic protocols:

  • They’re not meant to be on forever – and they should be supervised by a licensed practitioner who knows your medical history, your health history, etc.
  • They are designed for healing, *not for rapid weight loss*
  • If you have any kind of history of disordered eating, controlling your food, controlling thoughts about food, your body, or exercise, or you struggle with an all-or-nothing mentality – you need to be really, really careful with these. Because even though they are designed with healing in mind, they can reinforce old patterns.
  • We highly recommend working with a trained professional (licensed nutritionist, dietitian who focuses on a non-diet and intuitive eating approach, and maybe a therapist if you have any history of disordered eating!)
