Strawberry Banana Acai Smoothie | Real Food with Dana

It’s summer swim season again and you know what that means – I’ll be eating (and drinking) allllllll the smoothies all the time. This Strawberry Banana Acai Smoothie is inspired by one I had while I was in Charleston, South Carolina for a bachelorette party a few weeks ago and I’ve been craving it ever since, so I figured I would make my own version at home!

Strawberry banana was my favorite smoothie growing up…honestly, I don’t think I ate any other smoothies growing up, maybe until college? Yikes. Clearly this chick wasn’t on instagram with all the picture perfect smoothie bowls then (duh, because instagram really didn’t exist until I was out of college)

So what’s the big deal about acai, you ask?

Acai is a berry that is packed with antioxidants (meaning they’re super anti-inflammatory little powerhouses) – and has one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any fruit or veg! They also have a surprisingly high level of omegas (which are also anti-inflammatory) and fiber – yay for digestion! They’re also an awesome food for athletes, because these superfood berries contain essential electrolytes you need for fueling and re-fueling after your workout, including magnesium, potassium, manganese, and phosphorous. Winning! Even more interesting, it has been used traditionally as a treatment for parasitic infections, diarrhea, and ulcers (source).

I get mine in the freezer section of Whole Foods or Safeway, and they come in little packets so you can easily add them right into your smoothies for a superfood (and super delicious) boost. Pro tip: try to get fair trade, non-GMO acai that is from sustainable harvesting practices! Sambazon is the brand I get.

Throw some peanut butter on top for extra deliciousness!

Dana:
Serves: 2 smoothies
Ingredients
  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 packet frozen acai
  • 2 cups milk of your choice (I used almond milk)
Optional add-ins:
  • 1-2 Tbsp peanut butter
  • protein powder
  • 2 handfuls fresh spinach
Toppings
  • Fresh sliced bananas + strawberries
  • shredded coconut
  • hemp seeds
  • more peanut butter!
Directions
  1. throw the bananas, strawberries, acai, and milk in the blender and let it rip! You may need to add more liquid if the blender is having trouble (depends on the size of your frozen fruit).
  2. Throw in any add-ins like peanut butter, protein, or spinach, and blend again until the ingredients are combined.
  3. If you want a smoothie bowl, pour the smoothie in a shallow bowl and freeze it for a few minutes so all your toppings don't sink to the bottom when you put them on top.
  4. Top your bowl (or smoothie) with deliciousness of your choice!
